Septic System Repair in Summerton, SC

Septic Repair · Summerton, SC

Repairs that keep an existing septic system working

Septic system repair fixes a system that is already in the ground. South Carolina's septic rules call a repair any work that corrects a failure or malfunction in an existing system. Often the fix is one part: a cracked lid, a broken baffle, a crushed line or a tipped distribution box. Levelset2 finds the broken part and repairs it, at homes and lake houses around Summerton and Lake Marion.

Call or text (803) 478-2620 and tell us what is going on at the house. We look at the system and put a free quote in writing before any work starts. If the drain field itself has failed, the fix is drain field repair instead.

What Does Septic Tank Repair Fix?

Inside the tank, the inlet and outlet baffles control the flow. The inlet baffle slows incoming water so the sludge stays settled. The outlet baffle keeps solids in the tank and out of the drain field. When a baffle breaks, the state's homeowner guide says the system fails to work as it should.

Driving over the system can break the tank lid and the pipes. A fall into a septic tank can kill, the state warns, so a cracked lid is a safety risk. State tank standards say a riser must be sealed to the tank. A lid at ground level must be fastened down or heavy enough to keep people out.

Tree roots and vehicles can both break septic lines, say the EPA and the state. Under state rules, the line from the tank to the drain field must be solid Schedule 40 PVC. The distribution box splits the flow among the field lines, and a tipped box feeds some lines more. Some tanks also have an effluent filter on the outlet that catches small particles before they reach the field.

When a Repair Is Enough, and When It Is Not

A repair is enough when one part has failed and the drain field still takes water. A new tee or a short run of new line can put the system back in use.

A sewage backup can start at a crushed line or a broken tee, and both are repairs. Soggy ground over the field that does not dry out points to the field itself.

Some systems are past repair. A system that has failed as a whole calls for septic system replacement. If you plan to add bedrooms, the state may require a permit and an upgraded system first.

Septic Repair Around Summerton and the Santee Cooper Lakes

Summerton sits at the center of our service area, which runs about 50 miles around town. That takes in Manning, Santee, Sumter and Orangeburg, plus smaller towns such as Elloree and Holly Hill. Our main work is septic system installation in Summerton. Repairs keep older systems in use across the towns we serve.

After a flood, the state says most tanks come through undamaged because they sit below ground. It also warns that floodwater can lift the scum layer and plug the outlet tee. That can back sewage into the house. Its flood advice says to make sure the tank lid is secure and the inspection ports are not damaged.

FAQ

Septic Repair Questions, Answered

Common questions about septic repair around Summerton and the east side of South Carolina. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (803) 478-2620

What are the signs a septic system needs repair?
Slow drains and gurgling pipes are warning signs the EPA lists. So are damp spots near the tank and toilets that back up. The state adds that grass outlining the tank points to a leak or another problem.
How much does septic system repair cost?
The price depends on the part that failed and how much digging it takes to reach it. A new tee inside the tank is a smaller job than a long run of crushed line. A repair the state needs to review can add steps. We look at the system and put a free quote in writing before any work starts.
Does a septic repair need a permit in South Carolina?
Sometimes. State rules say the property owner notifies the state before a system or its parts are moved or replaced. The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services then decides whether the job needs a permit. For Clarendon County, the agency's regional septic office sits in Sumter.
Is pumping part of septic system repair?
Septic tank pumping is its own trade, and a pumping company does it. The state's homeowner guide says most home tanks need cleaning every three to five years. If a pumping company finds a broken tee or a cracked lid, we can take on that repair.
Why do I smell sewage near the septic tank?
A cracked lid or a riser whose seal has failed can let odors out. State tank standards call for covers built to hold in odors and keep water out. A smell can also come from a backup or from wet ground over the field. We look at the tank and the lines to find the source.
What should I do while I wait for a repair?
Use less water until the repair is done, and spread laundry across the week. The state's homeowner guide says each load can send up to 53 gallons into the system. Keep vehicles off the tank and the drain field, and keep everyone away from an open or cracked lid.
